1. Why a Panama-specific POS

Selling in Panama has unique rules: ITBMS 7% tax, mandatory DGI e-invoicing, integration with Banco General, Banistmo and Caja de Ahorros, plus the new Yappy standard for mobile payments. A generic POS imported from Mexico or Spain likely does not comply with DGI.

DGI-compatible e-invoicing — without this, you can be fined.
Configurable ITBMS — 7% default, exemptions for specific products.
Multi-currency USD/PAB — Panama uses balboa but operates in USD.
Local payments — cash, Visa/Mastercard, Yappy, Clave PIN.
Spanish + on-site support — when the thermal printer breaks on a Sunday you need someone local.

3. Software vs Hardware: what to buy first

The most common mistake is buying the hardware first (cash register, scanner, printer) and then finding out the software doesn't work with those devices. Always choose the software first, then ask for the compatible hardware list.

4. How much should it cost?

For a small shop (1 branch, 1-2 cash registers), a reasonable complete setup in Panama:

POS software: $29-49 USD/month per branch
15" touch register: $299-499 USD one-time
80mm thermal printer: $79-129 USD
Barcode scanner: $39-59 USD
Cash drawer: $49-79 USD

Total: $466-766 USD setup + $29-49/month. Anyone charging more than $1500 setup for a single branch is overselling.

5. Mistakes to avoid

Don't buy a legacy POS that only runs on one computer — you need cloud sync so you can see sales from your phone.
Don't accept long contracts without a trial — ask for 14 free days minimum.
Don't get sold a closed system that doesn't export CSV — one day you'll want to migrate.
